About AGIMO
The Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO), a business group within the Department of Finance and Deregulation, works across government to maintain Australia’s position as a leader in the productive application of information and communications technologies to government administration, information and services.
The AGIMO Blog is a place for vigorous discussion on a range of government ICT issues. We welcome and encourage you to share your thoughts and comments on AGIMO’s work.
AGIMO key roles and responsibilities include:
Leadership – AGIMO leads:
- the development of whole of government ICT strategies such as the ICT Strategic Vision and the cloud computing strategy;
- the coordination of governance of whole of government and cross-jurisdictional ICT;
- the Government 2.0 agenda, by chairing the Government 2.0 Steering Group; and
- in partnership with the APSC, the whole-of-government strategic ICT workforce plan incorporating the whole-of-government ICT career structure.
Operations – AGIMO runs:
- the Intra Government Communications Network (ICON), which links Australian Government agencies across the ACT;
- FedLink and the Ministerial Communications Network, providing secure telecommunications to Ministers, parliamentary offices, and agencies, throughout Australia; including the National TelePresence secure video-conferencing capability connecting all Australian governments;
- specialised ICT services for Finance – the Budget Group secure and the Wide Area Networks;
- specialised secure communications services in Canberra, interstate and overseas for the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet; and
- the .gov.au web domain naming regime across Australia.
- directory.gov.au – a guide to the structure, organisations and key people in the Australian Government. Information in the site is grouped under the four key arms of government: the Commonwealth Parliament, the Courts, the Governor-General and Australian Government departments and agencies.
Procurement – On behalf of the whole of government, AGIMO procures:
- telecommunications services including mobile phones, internet and managed services;
- desktop hardware;
- Microsoft licences; and
- data centre facilities and related services
Policy – AGIMO implements and administers these government ICT policies and standards:
- ICT investment management including the Two Pass approval process for major ICT enabled projects, agency capability assessments, and ICT benchmarking;
- the Internet Gateway Reduction Program, and related elements of the Cyber Security Strategy;
- the Data Centre Strategy 2010- 2025;
- the Common Operating Environment policy, to enable desktop standardisation across agencies;
- the ICT staff tele-working policy;
- the whole of government ICT arrangements opt-out policy;
- the application of changing Internet addressing regimes via the IPv6 transition policy;
- software development policies, including open source and bespoke development; and
- the Principles of Engagement on ICT encourage Government and Industry to work together to achieve better outcomes.
Service delivery – AGIMO provides services to citizens and government agencies through:
- australia.gov.au – the primary online entry point for government information and services;
- data.gov.au – the online repository of public sector information datasets;
- govspace.gov.au – the online social media collaboration platform for government;
- govdex.gov.au – the secure online collaboration service for government;
- eGovernment Awards – for excellence, innovation and professionalism in e-Government; and
- entry-level ICT programs to attract and retain skilled ICT professionals in the APS.
Advice – AGIMO advises government and agencies on:
- frameworks for improved integrated service delivery across agencies and jurisdictions such as the Australian Government Architecture and Better Practice guidelines;
- security and authentication standards, supporting the National Security CIO and government service delivery strategies;
- Australians’ use of the Internet and e-government services;
- web publishing and web content accessibility guidelines.
