New to the AGIMO Blog?
Introduction
New to the AGIMO blog and the world of the blogsphere? This new user guide should give you an overview of our blog and how it works. You’ll be ready and able to participate in no time.
The AGIMO blog is run by the Department of Finance and Deregulation, of which AGIMO (the Australian Government Information Management Office) is a business group. The blog is divided up into a number of different topic areas called ‘themes’ which can be found along the top of the light blue bar near the top of the screen.

Each theme has a number of posts within it relating to that topic. AGIMO works on a wide variety of different subjects and this is reflected in the themes. If you are interested in all of the work AGIMO does, simply scroll down the main page until you see a post of interest. However, if you are interested in a single subject area, click on it within the blue bar. A new page will load with all the posts under that topic. Note that each post will also display the number of comments currently published for that post. This is an important part of the blog, which we’ll get to in a moment.

The post on either the home page or the theme page only shows a limited amount or text, so click on the title to see the full post. Once you have scrolled through the entire post, next come all the comments other people have left on that post. This is where it gets interesting.
Comments
You can reply to any of these comments, or to the blog post itself. After each comment (on the right hand side) is a ‘reply’ link. To reply to a comment, click on the link. If you’d prefer to reply to the main post, scroll down past all the other replies to the comment box at the bottom of the screen.

In either case, you will need to enter in a name and an email address. If you’d prefer not to enter in a real name and email address, go right ahead. But make sure the email address follows a normal email address format, with a ‘@’ and a ‘.com’ or something similar. We need a way of confusing spambots and this is how we do it. Please refer to our privacy page if you’d like more details about how we protect your personal information.
Once you have entered your comment, click on the ‘submit comment’ button and your comment should be posted up on the site.

Hints and tips on comments:
- Less is more – people on the internet prefer to scan information, so make your comment succinct and scanable. Use short sentences and edit your work before posting.
- Don’t get involved in or respond to Flame Wars.
- Remember a variety of users comment on the blog – careful with phrases or technobabble that may not be understood.
A word on moderation
One of the pages you should read on any blog is the moderation page. This should give you information on if and how your comments will be published on any blog you read. Our moderation policy begins by saying:
We don’t want to hinder any conversations that are taking place on the AGIMO blog. The moderation process helps ensure that spam or comments that breach the terms of use are not published. We aim to publish most comments immediately.
You are invited to post a comment to that page on our moderation policy and processes should you wish.
Thanks to Steve Davies for sending in the original version of this guide. We’d love to hear your ideas about how we can make this blog work better for our community, so please leave us a comment!

AGIMO Blog latest posts
I find your website almost impenetrable. There is far too much information, no concise summaries and a zillion embedded links that take the user to more embedded links.
Pehaps it is time to employ a good writer and some editors to summarise and simplify.

Hi Angela
I don’t think there is anything wrong with the link provided they take people to worthwhile stuff.
Editors? Well, yes if all that was wanted was a psuedo corporate publication. Personally, I think we need to get past that mindset.

The New to AGIMO blog page is very nice. Simple is always best.
Great stuff.

Love your work, folks.
Is it possible to subscribe to a single RSS feed rather than having to subscribe to separate ones.
Based on the frequency of posting a single RSS feed would not be to busy – at least at this stage.

Hi John,
We have an RSS feed for all articles – http://agimo.govspace.gov.au/feed/
We also have another one which is for all comments http://agimo.govspace.gov.au/comments/feed/
Hopefully, this has helped. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi
I’m preparing a job application and one of the requirements is “knowledge of legislation relevant to the role of IT Support Officer”.
Would you please point me to “legislation relevant to the role of IT Support Officer”?
Thank you
Penka

Hi Penka,
First of all, the exact nature of the role will be important in terms of what legislation is considered relevant. The contact officer listed on the job advertisement should be more than happy to discuss these kinds of issues with you.
That said, you may be interested in AGIMO’s Web Guide, particularly the Mandatory Requirements for Australian Government agency websites. These mandatory requirements include legislation such as the Privacy Act 1988, the Freedom of Information Act 1982 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
In addition to legislation, some of the Mandatory Requirements are based on policy decisions and related guidelines – being aware of these may also help with your application!
Feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the straightforward guide guys, Im new to this blog thing and it still gets a bit confusing.

Hi, I note you have an RSS feed, but I would prefer to be able to receive a daily or weekly email digest of the content added to your site as we don’t have an RSS Reader at work. Isn’t there an available WordPress add-on to allow me to subscribe that you could install?

Hi Peter,
The particular implementation of WordPress that we use for this blog (govspace) does appear to have a standard plug-in that lets us set up email notifications for new posts. It may not deliver the digest-style emails you were after, but given our posting frequency, it should serve you just as well.
It will take us a little while to delve into how it works, but I am hopeful we can have something running on here next week. I’ll update you if anything happens.
